What we stand for
Marlas Greenspace is a newly formed community group of residents in North Cornelly, Bridgend. We approached our landlord, Valleys To Coast, with an idea to make better use of an under-utilised space, turning it into a community friendly area - incorporating elements of natural play that is encouraging residents of all ages to come outside.
We are supported and mentored by Wild Spirit Consultants to produce a robust project plan that is influencing a number of stakeholders’ and partnerships’ contributions, that has resulted in a resident led innovative project that is delivering measurable benefits to our community.
Since forming in 2018, there has been a lot of progress from us at Marlas Greenspace with the help of volunteers within the community.
After being allowed to turn an under-utilised space into a community friendly area successfully, Marlas Greenspaces has now been given an extra area to transform from a wasteland to a more community friendly Greenspace. In addition to this, we currently have assigned to us a fenced compound in Cornelly for our storage. We are in the process of turning it into a work safe area for all.
About Marlas
- The Marlas Estate is a part of North Cornelly, it has more than 4000 residents and is recognised by the government as a deprived area.
- The local area has 2 schools, 3 shops and a doctors surgery. Buses run through the village regularly.
- Marlas Estate has a lot of greenspace, though its mainly unused space full of brambles and weeds. Members of Marlas Greenspace and volunteers of all ages are committed to clearing it all up.
- Many of the buildings in Marlas Estate are maisonettes without their own gardens. Many of the residents have no outside space to enjoy.
- The community are without gardens, stuck indoors during this Coronavirus pandemic and they are calling out for Marlas Estate to become more family friendly and usable.
- There is a wide variety of age groups within Marlas Estate that would greatly benefit from having outdoor spaces to use.
